Wallet Passes for Square Sellers: Coupons and Loyalty at Your Register
Last verified: July 2026
If you sell with Square, your register can honor Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes today — no new hardware, no app installed at the register, no staff retraining. The cashier scans the customer's pass barcode the way they scan any product, and the discount applies to the sale instantly, even offline.
This guide covers what a wallet pass can do at a Square register, how the scan-to-discount mechanics work, and how to set it up.
What you can run at a Square register
A coupon campaign. Design a percentage or fixed-amount coupon ("10% off", "$5 off"), publish it, and share it by QR code or link. Customers add it to their wallet; your cashier scans it at checkout and the discount applies on the device. A minimum purchase amount ("$5 off orders over $50") is enforced by the register natively — the discount only applies once the subtotal qualifies.
A loyalty program. A full points-and-rewards loop runs at the register with no online store required: customers earn on every scanned purchase, the pass in their wallet updates itself — points tick up, and when a reward unlocks, the pass face changes to show it. No punch cards to print, no app for the customer, no separate loyalty screen for your staff.
A discount you already have. If you already run a discount in your Square catalog, a pass can link to it instead of creating anything new. Your discount keeps working exactly as you built it — staff tap it or your automatic discounts apply it — and scanning the pass attributes the sale, so you finally see which customers came from the pass. Pass Studio never edits a discount you own.
How the scan actually works
When you publish a pass campaign, Pass Studio creates hidden $0 items and an automatic discount rule in your Square catalog. Each customer's pass barcode is a scannable SKU: the cashier scans it, the $0 item lands on the sale, and the discount rule fires — on the device itself, which is why it works even offline. When the sale completes, the redemption is recorded and the customer's wallet pass updates.
For scanning you can use any supported barcode scanner, a Square Register or Handheld, or the camera scan built into the free Square for Retail app. (The standard Square POS app doesn't offer camera scanning — the free Retail app is the zero-hardware route.)
Setup (about five minutes)
- Create a Pass Studio account and design a coupon or loyalty pass.
- Go to Settings → Integrations → Square and click Connect Square. You authorize through Square's own OAuth page; no card or payment data is shared.
- Publish the pass. The register coupon is created in your Square catalog automatically.
- Scan a test pass at your own register before printing QR codes. (Ask us for a test if you want a hand — it takes two minutes.)
- Put the QR on your counter, window, receipts, or flyers.
Disconnecting works both ways: from Pass Studio Settings, or from your Square Dashboard's App integrations — a revocation is detected automatically.
Honest limitations
- The register applies one Pass Studio discount per sale — Square pricing rules don't stack; the largest wins.
- Item-count minimums ("10% off 3+ items") can't be enforced by Square's pricing rules — staff verify and apply those manually through the scanner page.
- A linked Square discount stays under your control, including its limits: the pass records the redemption, but Square doesn't stop the discount being used again unless you deactivate it.
FAQ
Do I need Square Loyalty (Square's paid add-on)?
No. The loyalty loop runs on the pass and your existing register — points, rewards, and automatic discounts work without Square's loyalty subscription.
Does my cashier need training?
They scan the pass like a product. That's the whole workflow.
Do customers need an app?
No — the pass lives in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which are already on their phone.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The discount rule lives in your Square catalog, so it applies on the device even without a connection; the pass update syncs when the sale completes.
What does it cost?
Pass Studio is pay-as-you-go credits — you start with 50 free, enough to build a pass and issue it to your first customers. The Square integration itself costs nothing extra.
Can I see what a pass campaign actually sold?
Yes — every scanned redemption is attributed to the campaign that first acquired the customer, whether they redeemed at the register or anywhere else.
